Therapy Sessions
I work from a therapy space on Easter Road in Leith, and offer 50-minute sessions.
I offer therapy sessions in Edinburgh. Each session is individual to the person I am working with. The main goal is to create a safe and compassionate space where you can bring what you want to explore. You don’t need to wear anything special, but may find it easier to come in clothes that are easy for you to move around in. It can be helpful to start with a brief physical warm up, which involve ssome focused breathing, noticing how your body feels in the moment, and getting things moving a bit.
We can make use of a variety of creative props that support movement exploration, or items that can be used in other creative ways - for instance making marks on paper, forming clay, using a sandplay tray, or making music with small instruments.
There is no expectation to launch straight into movement, so we can take our time by checking in verbally first if this feels right for you. You can talk as much or as little as you want in sessions, whether this is just at the beginning and end or at intervals in our session.
I keep an eye on the time to ensure that there is some cushion around the session ending, and you feel prepared to return to your day.
What Does a Dance Movement Psychotherapy Session Look Like?
The therapy space is created together and there is no expectation for you to move in every session. A therapy session can look different each week, and this can include spending the entire time sitting and talking or using other creative expression tools.
Do I need to dance or move in every session?
You don’t need to fit in a box, or have a formal diagnosis. I’ve previously worked with adults in the community and have supported with a variety of needs including:
depression/low mood
low self-esteem
anxiety
life change
relational difficulties
anger
chronic pain/health problems and the impact this has on day to day life
I have also worked with adults with a learning disability, including those who are non-verbal.
Who is Dance Movement Psychotherapy for?
Whether you are training to be a music therapist, art therapist, dramatherapist, or other form of therapist and seeking personal therapy as part of your course - or you are a student at university studying a non-therapy related subject, I offer therapy sessions at a reduced rate (£40) for students.
I’m a university student/training as a therapist. Can I work with you?
For some people, it can feel like a really big step to seek therapy, and when they feel it hasn’t “worked”, this is understandably disappointing. Every therapist has a different approach, and sometimes this can mean not finding what feels like a good fit for you.
“Good” therapy is about the relationship we build together, as well as exploring what approaches and modalities might feel best for you.
What if I’ve had therapy before and it didn’t work?
Open-ended therapy does not have a set timeline or end point, and allows for space to work together exploring what comes up for you. When you feel ready to end, we would discuss what a ‘good’ ending would look like for you.
Time-limited therapy, sometimes short-term therapy, has a set end point. We may focus more on one concern you have, and be conscious of a clear beginning, middle, and end to our time. I recommend that we book in at least six weeks for short-term therapy.
What is the difference between open-ended and time-limited therapy?
I am based in Edinburgh, and currently use space in Leith on Easter Road. The therapy space allows room for free movement, spaces to sit, and is cosy.
Please note that to access the room, there are two steps to get into the corridor.
The Space
Therapy sessions last for 50-minutes and cost £50. I offer a concessionary rate to students of £40.
I also offer a fixed amount of low cost slots, if you would like to find out if any are available please get in touch with me.
I offer appointments on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6pm onwards.
Therapy Rates and Availability
If you’re interested in taking the next step, and would like to explore therapy with me, I offer a free 20-minute telephone or video call as an opportunity for us to say hello, for you to ask me any questions you might have, and for me to get a bit of understanding of what your hopes are for therapy.
Following this, we can book in an initial face to face session if you’d like to. After our initial face to face session, if you are interested in continuing, I suggest committing to six sessions - we can then review and decide if you would like to continue with ongoing sessions or complete our time together.
