an Introduction to Dance Movement Psychotherapy

Embodied. Creative. Connected.

Come learn about the foundations of Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) -  a form of therapy that utilises the body and movement when exploring experiences and feelings.

The workshop is open to anyone who has an interest in DMP. You may be a talking therapist or counsellor, arts psychotherapist, student, be engaged in other somatic practices, or interested in exploring therapy for yourself in the future.

This introduction will include:

  • A brief history of Dance Movement Psychotherapy

  • Information about theoretical underpinnings of Dance Movement Psychotherapy

  • A guided experiential session to gain insight into what a DMP session can look like

  • Discussion and Q&A

No experience in dance necessary - come as you are!

This is not a therapy session, and participants will not be asked to disclose private material.

Practical Information: Because Dance Movement Psychotherapy is delivered in a variety of settings, there is never any need to wear anything other than usual street clothes. However, participants may be most comfortable in loose clothing that is easy to move in. Participants will be invited to take their shoes off to work in their socks/barefeet.

Treat yourself to a creative break with exercises to spark ideas, inspire small shifts, and give space to something different. Get out of your head and come back to yourself during an hour of movement, play, and mapping out your path in an area you’d like to focus on.

We’ll start with a welcome and guided body warm up before moving through some playful tasks to raise and channel energy levels. There will be time for guided solo exploration of a problem or goal you’d like to dig further into. You’ll be facilitated in looking at things from a different angle in a non-literal way. You can choose to think about a bigger goal, or something as small as what you want your week to look like. The session finishes with a calming grounding exercise to help transition into your commute home.

Tickets are £5, booking via Eventbrite.

Mum and Crawler/Toddler Moving Together

  • Studio One Pilates (map)

A wellbeing workshop series for toddlers, crawlers, and their mums.

This group is a friendly space for mums and their children to move with each other. We will come together for six weeks of supportive sessions providing the opportunity to stretch, breathe, and move with your child.

Movement is our first language. During these sessions, you will be guided through a dancing dialogue with your child. As your little one becomes more verbal and finds new ways to express themselves, uncover better communication through play and movement in this child-led environment. There will also be time for talking together as a community of mothers, sharing a spectrum of experiences in a non-judgemental environment.

We will look at:

- Stimulating creativity through collaborative play
- Paying attention to non-verbal cues
- Exploring emotional-regulation
- Acknowledging and attending to your needs as a woman and mother
- Resourcing yourself through your own body, returning to home
- Nourishing yourself and finding balance

Sessions are open to mums and children aged between 8 and 18 months, and are booked as part of a six week programme.

Starting on Wednesday 16 May (11:30 - 12:15) and running until Wednesday 20 June

£50 for the six-week series, booking via Eventbrite - Early Bird Tickets (15% off) available til 1 May

Moving in the Here and Now

Moving in the Here and Now

Incorporating embodiment into daily life

Take time out to breathe, focus, and get out of your head

  • relieve tension
  • develop skills in grounding
  • find your own strong foundation and inner resources to carry forward into daily life
  • tune into subtler gut responses
  • reconnect physical sensations with emotional responses
  • experiment and play

As a small group, we will work together compassionately exploring themes through movement, while offering space for individual work through tuning into your internal rhythms and following your intuition.

Is this workshop for me?
You may enjoy this workshop if you are looking for a break and a chance to release. You’re probably already open to trying new experiences, and interested in self-care. You may already be very tuned in to your emotions, and the physical signals your body gives in times of stress. If so, this is an opportunity to deepen your understanding through a creative process. If not, here is your chance to begin exploring!

What to expect
This workshop is a chance to take time out of the busy rushing of the day to day.  We will begin with an introduction and check-in, followed by an hour’s facilitated movement and tuning in, culminating in time to reflect. You do not need any movement experience to take part, and your movement explorations can be as functional or wild, as within your comfort zone or without, as you would like. Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and bring water.

£20
To book your place, please email firm.footing.movement@gmail.com
